Use below Guide for Raspberry Pi 4 <\/strong>and OS Ubuntu 20.04 (64 bit only)<\/strong>. If you are using older hardware<\/strong> <= Raspberry Pi 3 use this guide instead Complete guide NextCloud + External HDD NTFS + Nginx Proxy Manager<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If you are looking for self-host-dropbox-like you are coming to the right place, I am using OS Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and one 6TB HDD ext which is not ideal<\/span>, if you possible, use minimum 2 HDD and setup RAID 1 using mdam tools for data safety. With this setup you can stream video normally.<\/p>\n

Step 1 – Install PiHole + DNSCrypt-Proxy + Samba (optional)<\/h2>\n

Why? I will tell you later, follow along this step, however the additional is to install SAMBA<\/strong> when you configure dockstarter https:\/\/eligiblestore.com\/blog\/2020\/08\/20\/simplest-pihole-dnscrypt-proxy-implementation-on-raspberry-pi-4\/<\/a><\/p>\n

Step 2 – Install Nginx Proxy Manager<\/h2>\n

You can follow below this blog https:\/\/dbtechreviews.com\/2020\/06\/install-nginx-proxy-manager-on-a-raspberry-pi-4\/<\/a> or watch this https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2oi4IQF7VnE<\/a><\/p>\n

Step 3 – Mount your HDD ext<\/h2>\n

Open your terminal and SSH\/Mosh your Pi and find your mountable drive:<\/p>\n

$ sudo fdisk -l<\/pre>\n
or<\/p>\n
$ lsblk -fp<\/pre>\n
Mount your ext drive (in my case it’s located at \/dev\/sda1 <\/strong>and I am going to mount it to \/mnt\/hdd<\/strong>):<\/p>\n
\r\n$ sudo mkdir \/mnt\/hdd\r\n$ sudo mount \/dev\/sda1 \/mnt\/hdd\r\n<\/pre>\n
That’s it, now try to list the directory and confirm everything is nice and make nextcloud directory inside the hdd<\/p>\n
\r\n$ ls \/mnt\/hdd\r\n$ mkdir \/mnt\/hdd\/nextcloud\r\n<\/pre>\n
and since nextcloud will be using user www-data for the directory (otherwise will not be able to configure nextcloud) let’s add user pi<\/strong> to group www-data<\/strong><\/p>\n
\r\n$ sudo usermod -a -G www-data pi\r\n<\/pre>\n
Confirm that user pi is under group 33(www-data)<\/p>\n
\r\n$ id pi\r\n<\/pre>\n
Finally let’s make sure everytime Raspberry Pi reboot, you will not lose the mount or mount manually<\/p>\n
\r\n#make backup for fstab first in case anything wrong you can revert back\r\n$ sudo cp \/etc\/fstab \/etc\/fstab-bak\r\n\r\n#find and copy the UUID of your external HDD\r\n$ lsblk -fp\r\n\r\n#edit fstab\r\n$ sudo nano \/etc\/fstab\r\n<\/pre>\n
Copy below to the last line of fstab don’t forget to modify UUID to your UUID otherwise you will not be able to boot your Pi<\/p>\n
UUID=TH1S1SY0URUD1DN0 \/mnt\/hdd ntfs-3g async,big_writes,noatime,nodiratime,nofail,uid=33,gid=33,permissions,umask=007 0 0<\/pre>\n
Next reboot your Pi, fingercross everthing is fine, after reboot try listing the directory, to confirm everything is tight.<\/p>\n
sudo reboot<\/pre>\n
Step 4 – Install Nextcloud<\/h2>\n
Create below directory if not exists:<\/p>\n
\/home\/ubuntu\/.config\/nextcloud\/<\/pre>\n
Go to that directory and create a file called docker-compose.yml inside that directory:<\/p>\n
\r\ncd \/home\/ubuntu\/.config\/nextcloud\/\r\nnano docker-compose.yml\r\n<\/pre>\n
Insert below, don’t forget to change the password.<\/p>\n
version: '3'\r\n\r\nservices:\r\n  db:\r\n    image: yobasystems\/alpine-mariadb:latest\r\n    command: --transaction-isolation=READ-COMMITTED --binlog-format=ROW\r\n    restart: always\r\n    volumes:\r\n      - \/home\/ubuntu\/.config\/appdata\/nextcloud\/mysql:\/var\/lib\/mysql\r\n      - \/etc\/localtime:\/etc\/localtime:ro\r\n    environment:\r\n      - MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD=[COMPLEX_ROOT_PASSWORD<\/strong>]\r\n      - MYSQL_PASSWORD=[COMPLEX_DB_PASSWORD<\/strong>]\r\n    env_file:\r\n      - db.env\r\n\r\n  redis:\r\n    image: redis:alpine\r\n    command: redis-server --requirepass [COMPLEX_REDIS_PASSWORD<\/strong>]\r\n    restart: always\r\n    volumes:\r\n      - \/home\/ubuntu\/.config\/appdata\/nextcloud\/data:\/data\r\n      - \/etc\/localtime:\/etc\/localtime:ro\r\n\r\n  app:\r\n    image: nextcloud:latest\r\n    restart: always\r\n    ports:\r\n      - 8081:80\r\n    volumes:\r\n      - \/mnt\/hdd\/nextcloud\/html:\/var\/www\/html\r\n      - \/home\/ubuntu\/.config\/appdata\/nextcloud\/conf.d:\/usr\/local\/etc\/php\/conf.d\r\n      - \/etc\/localtime:\/etc\/localtime:ro\r\n    environment:\r\n      - MYSQL_HOST=db\r\n      - REDIS_HOST=redis\r\n      - REDIS_HOST_PASSWORD=[COMPLEX_REDIS_PASSWORD<\/strong>]\r\n    env_file:\r\n      - db.env\r\n    depends_on:\r\n      - db\r\n      - redis\r\n\r\n  cron:\r\n    image: nextcloud:latest\r\n    restart: always\r\n    volumes:\r\n      - \/mnt\/hdd\/nextcloud\/html:\/var\/www\/html\r\n    entrypoint: \/cron.sh\r\n    depends_on:\r\n      - db\r\n      - redis\r\n\r\nvolumes:\r\n  db:\r\n  nextcloud:\r\n<\/pre>\n
and then create “db.env” file inside same directory:<\/p>\n
\r\ncd \/home\/ubuntu\/.config\/nextcloud\/\r\nnano db.env\r\n<\/pre>\n
MYSQL_DATABASE=nextcloud\r\nMYSQL_USER=nextcloud\r\n<\/pre>\n
Once finished just run below command:<\/p>\n
docker-compose up -d<\/pre>\n
Step 5 – Setup NextCloud<\/h2>\n
If everything setup correctly you should be able to go to http:\/\/raspberrypi:8081<\/a> from there you can configure the admin user & password, leave data folder as it is since we already link it in docker to the external hdd, for database:<\/p>\n
